Summary
Link has taken many forms throughout theLegend of Zeldaseries, and now fans are trying to come up with a nickname for the miniature version found in the upcomingLegend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. During this week’s Nintendo Direct June 2024 livestream, Nintendo announcedThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, a spiritual follow-up to 2019’sLink’s Awakeningremakethat will put players in the role of Princess Zelda as she embarks on a quest to rescue Link after he is sucked into a mysterious portal.
As longtimeZeldafans know, the series has seen multiple timelines and different versions of characters like Link. Some of these different incarnations have even appeared as separateplayable characters in theSuper Smash Brosseries. There is Young Link, the child hero of Hyrule as he is shown at the beginning ofOcarina of TimeandMajora’s Mask, as well as the older Adult Link that players control in titles likeTwilight PrincessandSkyward Sword. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Wakerintroduced fans to Toon Link, a stylized, cel-shaded adventurer who has also appeared in the handheld spin-offsPhantom HourglassandSpirit Tracks.

2019’sThe Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakeningremakeintroduced a new art style that depicted Link with a small body and larger head, making the hero of Hyrule resemble a collectible minifigure to some. This art style will return inThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and Reddit user Mumu2148 recently struck up a conversation about what their fellowZeldafans should call this new incarnation. Their own suggestion was “Toy Link,” and many other users agreed with this due to Link’s similarities to a polymer clay sculpture or a Funko Pop.
Fans Are Dubbing Echoes of Wisdom’s Link as ‘Toy Link’
Of course, there have been plenty of other suggested nicknames forthe Link found inEchoes of Wisdom. Some users pitched names like “Pocket Link” or “Little Link,” referencing how this incarnation looks smaller than even the Young Link of past games. Others liked the idea of him being called “Chibi Link,” though some were quick to point out how this might lead to confusion with Young Link and Toon Link. There was also “Awakened Link,” which references how this version made his first appearance in theLink’s Awakeningremake.
One of the more interesting aspects of the long-runningLegend of Zeldaseries is how different entries have provided players withunique versions of classic characters like Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, to the point where different incarnations have been given nicknames to set them apart. WithLink’s AwakeningandThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomoffering up a smaller, toy-like Link design, it looks like players have a new version of Link to give a name to.
