Rogues inWorld of WarcraftSeason of Discoverymay not have everything in their toolkit at Level 25, but in later phases, the class is sure to turn into a powerhouse. But despite historically being a DPS-only class across all three specs, Rogues (along with Warlocks, Shamans, and Mages) are getting brand-newdungeon and raid “specs” in SoD, in this case, the role of the Tank.

In Phase One, there were a total 12 SoD Rogue Runes, available for the Chest, Legs, and Gloves slots. In Phase Two, six more Rogue Runes were added for the Boots and Belt slots, making for a total of eighteen across all five. This guide details both the effects and locations of all Rogue SoD Runes added in Phase One and Phase Two.

Updated June 05, 2025 by Erik Petrovich: As players prepare to enter the third phase, and pick up new Runes, Phase 1 SoD Rogue Runes and Phase 2 SoD Rogue Runes aren’t going anywhere. Though we don’t yet know if there will be an easier way to get the first two phases' Runes in P3, the original methods to get Rogue Runes from SoD hase One and Two should still work. What hasn’t remained the same. throughout the numerous WoW SoD patches. are the specific effects of the P1 and P2 SoD Rogue Runes. This guide has been updated to specifically list all Runes available in the first two SoD Phases for Rogues, and will no longer be updated to include later phases' runes. Additionally, the effects of these Runes have been updated to match their current in-game effects accurately, as of the publish date.

To preserve the sense of mystery intended for the Season of Discovery, each P1/P2 SoD Rogue Rune location is hidden by default. Open the “Click to Reveal” box to show details on how to get all Phase One and Phase Two Rogue Runes in SoD.

Poisoned Knife, Shadowstep, & Shuriken Toss

Poisoned Knife Rune

To get the Rune of the Poisoned Blade, and thus the Poisoned Knife Rune, head to Desolace and look for an extinguished Campfire just northwest of the Kodo Graveyard (slightly north of the “D” in “Kodo” on the map). Pick up the quest Highway Robbery, then go directly northwest to find Kormek’s Hut on the ridge overlooking the graveyard. Turn in Highway Robbery, pick up the next quest On The Lam, then head to Booty Bay.

In the Inn, talk to Tokal to continue the questline and pick up Cherry For Your Thoughts. Purchase some Cherry Grog from the barkeep and give it to her to continue onto the next part, No Honor Among Thieves.

Go to the border of the Wetlands and the Arathi Highlands and look for a boat underneath the Thandol Span bridge. Jump down into the water and interact with this boat to teleport to the far eastern shore of the Highlands. Talk to Illari Duskfeather, choose either Dialogue option, and kill her to get Illari’s Key. Open the nearby Illari’s Loot Cache to get the Rune.

Shadowstep Rune

To get the Rune of Shadowstep, you must first reach Level 30 and have completed the Deadly Brew series of quests from Phase One (which are still available in Phase Two).

At Level 30, you will get another letter from the mysterious “C” instructing you to return to the Dead Drop in Pyrewood Village. Return here to learn your next job: to steal the Eye of Bhossica from the Scarlet Monastery. There are several steps to this process, but first, go to Scarlet Monastery and look behind the area to find a Supply Locker inside the Monastery stable. Loot this to get a Scarlet Monastery disguise.

After getting the disguise, head into the Graveyard wing, and put it on before running into enemies. This will turn them neutral, but interacting with anything or casting abilities will get rid of the disguise. Be sure to bring plenty of Flash Powder to escape if necessary. Pickpocket a Scarlet Scryer (which gets rid of the disguise) to get a Scryer’s Key, then leave the instance.

Next, go into the Library wing, put on your disguise, and go all the way to nearly the end of the instance to find the Athanaeum. Look for a Personal Letterbox on a ledge in here, and loot it to get the Confidential Message.

Then, go back to the Graveyard wing, and follow the Confidential Message instructions. As you enter the Graveyard proper, there should be two small walled-off areas to the right and left. Perform the /sit emote on the benches between the statues in each of these areas – you’ll know you’ve done it right if your character “hears a click” in chat.

Go to the center-north of the Graveyard and loot the Stone Coffer inside of a Mausoleum to get a Reliquary key. Finally, head back to the Library, to the Gallery of Treasures, and look for a Padlocked Reliquary in a room off to the side. Loot this to get the Eye of Bhossica, and return to the Dead Drop in Pyrewood Village.

After turning in the Eye, return to a Capitol City, and you should receive another message from “C”. Return to the Dead Drop one last time to get the Rune of Shadowstep.

Shuriken Toss Rune

To get the Rune of the Assassin, which unlocks the Shuriken Toss Rune, head to the northern Swamp of Sorrows around (42, 30). On a nearby tree, look for a Dart Trap attached to the trunk, which shoots Poison Darts if players get too close. Select the Trap, use Disarm Trap, and loot the Conspicuous Cache that spawns to get the Shuriken Rune.

Master of Subtlety, Waylay, & Rolling With The Punches

Waylay Rune

The Rune of the Assailant (and the Waylay Rune) unlocks via the Phase Two Dark Rider questline. To begin, head to Ariden’s Camp in Deadwind Pass at around (52, 34.5) in the zone. Talk to the Dalaran Agent at the camp to get Ariden’s Sigil. He will ask you to recover seven Dalaran Relics from Dark Riders throughout Azeroth. Each of the Dark Riders is about as difficult as a Dungeon boss at 40, but because all classes have one Rune tied to the SoD Dark Rider, it’s not too hard to get a five to ten-man group together.

The Dark Riders can be found in Duskwood, Deadwind Pass, Swamp of Sorrows, Badlands, The Barrens, Desolace, and the Arathi Highlands. After killing each one, head back to the Dalaran Agent and give him the recovered Dalaran Relics. After completing each quest (which reward about 1.5g at Level 40), the Agent will give you a bag containing the Rune.

Master of Subtlety Rune

To get the Master of Subtlety Rune, go to Kurzen’s Compound in northeastern Stranglethorn Vale. In the only large stone tower in the camp, you will find an NPC named Wendel Mathers. Talk to him, then go into the nearby cave and pickpocket Kurzen enemies within until you get a Compound Cage Key. While you are still in the cave, look for a Kurzen Supply Crate in the deeper area of the cave with lots of Kurzen Elites. Use Lockpicking on this to get a Kurzen Disguise – you need at least 125 Lockpicking to open it.

Then, return to Wendel Mathers in the tower, and give him the key and the disguise. He will leave, without revealing much about what to do next. Head to Booty Bay and jump into the water, then swim towards the ramp that leads back upward. An NPC named Captain Aransas will be standing to the north of this ramp – talk to her to receive the Rune, as well as Jani’s Charm, part of a Priest Rune quest line.

Rolling with the Punches Rune

To get the Rolling with the Punches Rune, go to Thousand Needles, and head to Camp E’Thok at about (18.5, 21). Look for the largest tent in the Camp and head inside. You should see a Sizable Stolen Strongbox on the wall. Open it to discover a slightly smaller chest, which contains another smaller chest, and so on and so forth. The Lockpicking requirement for each of the smaller chests gets higher and higher as you go, so be sure to max out the skill before going for this Rune.

After opening enough chests-within-chests (starting with the Large Strongbox and ending with the Small Strongbox), you will loot the Rune of the Southpaw, which unlocks Rolling with the Punches.
