Bethesda wantsThe Elder Scrolls 6to be the “ultimate fantasy-world simulator.” Bethesda first announcedThe Elder Scrolls 6all the way back at E3 2018 with a teaser trailer that didn’t reveal much beyond the game’s logo. Even though there have been little to no updates onThe Elder Scrolls 6since then, hype is still at a fever pitch for the game, especially since it’s been over a decade since its predecessor released.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimfirst launched in 2011 to rave reviews and has been hailed as one of the best video games ever made. Considering the dizzying success ofSkyrim, one would think thatThe Elder Scrolls 6would be a priority for Bethesda. However, Bethesda took a different route. Instead of following upSkyrimwithThe Elder Scrolls 6, it focused its attention ontheFalloutfranchise, releasingFallout 4andFallout 76. It then put its focus onStarfield, its ambitious new open world sci-fi RPG that is finally nearing its release date.

Consideringhow long it’s been sinceSkyrimlaunched, expectations are going to be astronomical forThe Elder Scrolls 6. But if Bethesda succeeds in meeting its goal for the game, it should safely live up to the hype. Todd Howard recently told GQ that Bethesda wantsThe Elder Scrolls 6to “fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed.”

WithStarfieldjust recently going gold, it will likely be many years beforeThe Elder Scrolls 6launches. It’s been said thatThe Elder Scrolls 6release date is still five+ years away, meaning it will potentially launch in 2028 at the earliest. With this in mind, GQ also asked Howard if he regrets making theElder Scrolls 6announcement at E3 2018. Howard said that he doesn’t know if regrets it, but that he “probably would’ve announced it more casually.” Howard also confirmed thatThe Elder Scrolls 6has a codename, but he declined to reveal it to GQ during the interview.

Todd Howard has previously suggested thatThe Elder Scrolls 6could be the last game he directs, though in the GQ article, he said that he wants to be developing games forever. Howard said that the way he makes games “will probably evolve,” but he pointed out how Shigeru Miyamoto is still actively developing video games, even at 70 years old.
