Varietyrevealed that despite the writers' strike, theMinecraftmovie script is already finished and can start production as early as Spring. This depends on the actors and the studios agreeing to a deal to end the SAG strike soon, which seems likely with the recent agreement between the writers and the studios. If the actors' strike does not end shortly, they could always gothe same route asSonic 3,which decided to film scenes without human actors first.
At one point, the film had a 2019 release date, which was then pushed to a 2022 release; the currentMinecraftmovie release dateis July 30, 2025. That is still a long wait, and at the moment, it seems like the film will be back on track and hopefully will not be delayed any further. According to Variety,Minecraftis one of the highest-priority films for Warner Bros. outside of their upcoming DC projects.
With nearly a decade of development and many fans askingwhat has happened to theMinecraftmovie, this is a nice update for the highly anticipated video game film adaptation. TheSuper Mario Bros. Moviemade over $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of the year and the 15th-highest-grossing film of all time. With the success of other films like theSonicfranchise andUnchartedand the critical success of shows likeThe Last of Us, video game adaptations are making an unprecedented comeback.
Minecraftis the most popular game ever, with over 230,000,000 copies sold on all platforms. With a huge star like Momoa attached,Minecraft’s box office gross could rival theSuper Mario Bros. Movie.
