InThe Fate of Baldr, players join the Vikings of Midgard in a tower defense adventure game where players defend their ship against mythical bosses, build towers, upgrade skills, and mine resources on a quest to revive thefallen God Baldr from Norse mythology. It also offers a single-player and co-op multiplayer experience, wherein players choose to play as different Viking character classes, each with various weapons and abilities.
In a recent interview, Game Rant spoke with Ananki Game Studio CEO/Programmer André Kråkenes, 3D Artist/Programmer Anders Evjen Bakke, and 2D Artist Asia Iakimova aboutThe Fate of Baldr’s character classes, including their shared and unique abilities. The developers also discussed several of its post-demo changes.

The Fate of Baldr’s Viking Classes
The Fate of Baldrfeatures four Viking classes for players to choose from. The inclusion of four classes also seems to reflect its multiplayer co-op game design as a game that lets players join forces with up to four people, something not always found within the genre which could potentially give it aunique tower defense game experience. Additionally, each class offers individual abilities and different playstyles in addition to a shared feature. As Evjen Bakke explained,
…All classes have a distinct jetpack. They are pretty much the same with a bit of variation in fuel, so you may’t travel as far with some of them. They share that.

There is a different style for each player. They have this sniper class. You have a big machine gun class, a rocket launcher class, and a more very close-range class – that’s the four today.
Each class has a distinct name from Norse mythology as one ofThe Fate of Baldr’s core inspirations. Kråkenes described the Berserker or close-range class as “more focused on melee combat, but he also has a shotgun to fight enemies up close.” Thesniper classis called Hird, which Kråkenes added can stun enemies. Additionally, Kråkenes further explained the machine gun class, named Nidingr, has building abilities.
He has a big machine gun, but he’s also a builder. Eventually, you sort of unlock the ability to build towers quicker. This class is also better at gathering the resources that you need to build these structures to stop these incoming waves of enemies.
The Fate Of Baldr Post-Demo Changes
The team also stated there are many changes following feedback fromThe Fate of Baldr’s demo earlier in 2023. For instance, the summoning stone mechanic previously used to conjur waves of enemies has been removed. There have also been changes and new additions, with Evjen Bakke describing the design of itsNorse mythology-inspired game worldsas one of the main changes, with the team currently focusing on the level design and appearance of the game. Kråkenes also mentioned a brand-new energy bar feature as another post-demo change,
…You also have this energy bar. It gets filled up based on the actions of the player, so by shooting the enemy, the energy goes up. This energy is one you later use to shoot with this ultimate attack. We have also added the option to build up energy by using the tower for a duration.
Overall, it seemsThe Fate of Baldrcould offer an intriguingly different experience upon release compared to what some players may have seen in the demo. Its sci-fi, Viking themes, and addition ofonline co-op multiplayerensures there’s a little something for everyone.
