Although Amazon doesn’t disclose rating information for its shows, the company shared that global viewership for the series has grown by +17% from season two. Therefore, the decision to renewThe Boysis not at all surprising. “Speaking for the cast and crew, we’re so grateful to Sony, Amazon, and most of all the fans for embracing the show and allowing us to make more,” showrunner Eric Kripke said of the renewal. “We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and the Boys’ fight against Homelander (Antony Starr) and the Seven, as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in. Also, this is the first time in history that exploding genitalia has led to further success.”

The Boysseason 3 picks upa year after the events of season 2. Hughie (Jack Quaid) is working directly with Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) at the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs. Butcher (Karl Urban), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) are also working with the Bureau, though Butcher is tired of keeping things on the books and is close to going back to his more violent approach of hunting down supes. Meanwhile, evil megacorporation Vought has developed a formulation of compound V that temporarily grants the users superpowers, and Homelander is trying to restore his damaged reputation after his (failed) relationship with Stormfront (Aya Cash), a literal Nazi.

In addition to Quaid, Capone, Fukuhara, Starr, Cash, and Urban, the new season sees the return of Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Dominique McElligott (Queen Maeve), Giancarlo Esposito (Stan Edgar), Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir), and Colby Minifie (Ashley). Season 3 also introduces a few new characters, includingSupernatural’sJensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, Laurie Holden as Crimson Countess, and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk.

So far,The Boyshave kept the gory violence and biting social commentary that made the series so popular. Earlier this year Crawford teased thatThe Boysseason 3 would be much weirderthan previous seasons, which is expected coming from a show that thrives on mayhem to deliver some profound insight on corporate greed, celebrity culture, and late-stage capitalism.
