The Afterparty, the new television offering from directing and producing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, just reached the end of its first season with an ending that carried on the engaging feel of the rest of the show. In a timely manner, now it seems the show will continue past this point with at least one returning cast member. But how things will continue from here still has yet to be seen.
Apple TV Plushas announced that its originalcomedy/murder mystery seriesThe Afterpartywill officially receive a second season, likely relieving some tension among viewers hoping to see more. Luckily, for those who immediately fell in love with Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner, she’s the first (and possibly only) star to be confirmed as part of season 2. Since some people still haven’t seen the season finale just yet, there will be no spoilers. But it will still be interesting to see where things go from here.

The Afterpartywas created and directed by Miller, who co-wroteSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseand co-producedthe award-worthyThe Mitchells vs. the Machines. He took charge this time around while still working together with his long-time filmmaking partner Lord as producers. The series sees Haddish as Detective Danner investigating the mysterious death of celebrity Xavier (Dave Franco) during a high school reunion afterparty at his swanky beachside home. As every partygoer is questioned individually, they tell their version of the evening’s events, with each story taking the form of a different genre.
One episode, told from the perspective of Sam Richardson’s Aniq, isseen as a romantic comedywhere he continually tries and fails to ignite a spark with his long-time crush Zoë (Zoë Chao). But audiences get another angle at those same events when a later episode sees Zoë tell her own version in the form of a wacky cartoon. The episodic format seems tailor-made for TV. But it turns out that Miller may not have originally planned it that way.
During an interview with both Lord and Miller as part of Deadline’s “The Film That Lit My Fuse” series, Miller revealed thatThe Afterpartywas almost a film. “[We] originally wrote it as a movie,” he explained, “but then we kind of realized that, within the two-hour movie format, there’s not quite enough time to dive as deeply into each character’s POV. But if we put it into an 8-episode series where each character gets their own episode, then you can really dive in there and [make] it much more interesting.”
The Afterpartywas one of the most pleasant surprises of the year so far, and now that there’s more to come, the surprises are sure to continue. The series includes an all-star cast, including John Early, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer and Jamie Demetriou, along with a similarly impressive supporting cast bolstered by talent likeStar Wars Rebels' own Tiya Sircar. So if nothing else, there’s plenty of star power to catch those eyes. All that’s left now is to speculate on where season 2 could go. What if this becomes the TV comedy version ofKnives Out, where Detective Danner keeps taking on new cases with new casts like Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc? Sounds like genuine gold.
The Afterpartyseason 1 is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
