David Corenswet is taking over the role inSuperman: Legacy, and a new report has seemingly confirmed where Supergirl will fit in. According toDaniel Richtman, a known Hollywood insider whose rumor report has been trusted, Gunn is now casting Supergirl forSuperman: Legacy, essentially confirming Calle will be replaced. Though this is no confirmation that DC is dropping Calle, it would be no big surprise if this comes out to be true.
Gunn made the controversial yet wise decision to replace Cavill and start fresh. It’s not hard to understand why Gunn made the decision, despiteThe Witcheractor being beloved by fans of DC. The DC movies have been shaky at best, and this is a surefire way to put his spin on the franchise. Gunn does his best work in a character-driven field, andSuperman: Legacy’s main conflict won’t be a villain.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3was the best of the trilogy because of how much it leaned into character development. Finally, Quill (Chris Pratt) became a hero worth rooting for. Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) officially becomes his best self as fans shed tears watching his origin story. Displaying impressive skill, Gunn effectively fixed everything wrong with David Ayer’sSuicide Squadwhile retaining all the elements that worked.

This strategy seems to be how Gunn has handled DC, includingSuperman: Legacy. As he saved fan-favorite Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, he did away with other aspects that weren’t working. Similarly, he seems to be holding onto Jason Momoa as Aquaman for now but trimmed the fat on other projects. The Flashwas nowhere near a perfect film. Because ofThe Flash’s disappointing box office run, Gunn would have to do a lot of retooling to make that movie work in his new era. Calle was arguably the best part of The Flash, which was otherwise weak on many levels. It may just be efficient to redo Supergirl altogether. It is a hard pill to swallow, but Gunn hasn’t led fans of the franchise wrong yet.
Superman: Legacyis currently in pre-production.
