With the recently released Sephiroth heading the event, Nintendo announces a special Christmas Day tournament inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Named “Dark Reunion,” theSmash Bros.tournament will take place online from December 25 to December 28, and only allow “characters who have embraced the darkness.”

One key to the longevity ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatehas been its inclusion of online tournaments, usually centered around a theme. Back in May, Nintendo announced a month-long Online Open tournament as coronavirus lockdowns went into full swing. A previous Mushroom Tournament featured power-ups fromSuper Mario Bros.andEarthbound. Alightweight-themed tournamentfeatured the light and fluffy fighters. This Dark Reunion tournament will be themed around the release of Sephiroth and other villain fighters.

EarlySmash Bros.games lacked much of a villainous presence, but with each released version that has increased. Currently, players have well over 70 fighters to choose from, with Nintendo promising more on the way. With so many characters in the game, it’s no surpriseSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateoffers quite a few villains, so players will have plenty to choose from for the upcoming tournament.

The latest character added toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate,Sephiroth, and his availability during this tournament gives players an excuse to try him out at a competitive level. Other fighters available during the tournament will include characters like King Dede, Dark Pit, Meta Knight, Dark Samus, and Bowser.

While it may have been a seemingly inevitable choice by Nintendo after Cloud inSmash 4, Sephiroth’s release excited many fans, with quite a fewspeedrunning the Sephiroth Challenge to unlock him early. Other fans lamented the inclusion of another sword fighter inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. While Sephiroth may be deserving of a roster spot, it’s yet to be seen as to whether he changes the meta or fits right into an established scene. Sephiroth has quick movement and long-range attacks, but his height makes him easier to hit.

With the changes included in the10.1.0 patch forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, many characters have received buffs that could help increase their competitive viability. As with any in-game tournament, the better a player does the more spirit rewards they can earn. Spirit rewards can be spent in the World of Lights Shop to use snacks on spirits, summon new ones, or reset adventure skills.
