With all of the streaming services out there it’s hard to limit yourself to just a few, with each platform offering exclusive and original content. Peacock, a new competitor to Netflix and Disney Plus, is getting one of their first exclusive deals, boosting their threat to larger streaming platforms. Peacock, owned by NBCUniversal, recently signed a deal with Universal Studios that will impact films like the upcomingSuper Mariomovie.

Beginning in 2022, all new films coming out under Universal Studios, Dreamworks, and Illumination will be exclusive to Peacock after their initial theatrical release. This new decision will affect how people can view many anticipated films coming out under Universal next year. Among these are the newMinionsandSuper MarioBros.movie made by Illumination, the newJurassic Worldfilm, and the sequel toA Puss In Boots. Reportedly, Peacock will have exclusive access to these films for the first and last four months of their 18-month streaming availability window, after their theatrical runs.

Reuters reports the contract will allow thesefilms to head to Peacockno later than four months after their theatrical release. Currently, Universal’s film stream to HBO TV channel and HBO Max, both owned by AT&T, about six months after their theatrical debut. The shortened time frame between theater releases and streaming debuts is a new concept coming out of COVID-19 pandemic film protocols and months of theaters being closed entirely. The shortened wait time and the new contract with Peacock are truly unique and will give the underdog streaming service a new edge.

In regards to some of the affected movies, includingtheSuper Mariomovie, some debate is up regarding the current production status of some of those films. With the announcement of the new animated film from Nintendo years ago came almost no further information other than a 2022 release window. It was reported that the founder of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, was involved with the film this past May. Also, the classic voice actor of Mario, Charles Martinet, reported he was never reached out to about the film, making the cast entirely unclear. There is also a possibility Nintendo will be making moreSuper Mariofilms in the future.

Exciting new things are clearly in the works for Peacock. Along withexclusively streamingThe Officethis past year, the streaming service has also been working on a number of new original films and shows, including the new Joe Exotic project, and many other projects in the works.
