Many expected Capcom to be moving on fromStreet Fighter 5and begin work onStreet Fighter 6for the next generation of consoles.Street Fighter 5 Champion Editionis very much the definitive version of the game but, while it’s unlikely that Capcom will release another iteration, it turns out that support for it is far from over.
Back in May, Capcom announced that it would be releasing one final season of content forStreet Fighter 5, with the only details being five new characters and three new stages. Exact details are still vague but Capcom has confirmed a date for when it will be discussing the game’s future.

Titled theStreet Fighter 5Summer Update, a stream will be taking place on August 5th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST on the Capcom Fighters Twitch channel. The team will be making an appearance, as well as some unannounced special guests, and it will feature character reveals, esports news, and more.
“Reveals” seems to imply that we’ll see more than one new character be announced for the game. We could potentially see all five be announced and when they’re expected to release, but that’s only a theory.
As for who will make the cut, while there is always the possibility of at least one of them being a completely brand new fighter, fans are probably getting their hopes up for any of the old favorites from previous games to make a return.
Street Fighter 5boasts 40 characters in its roster but there are still some noticeable absentees like Dan Hibiki, C. Viper, and Abel. Though we can certainly think of one or two characters that fans most likely don’t want to see make a return, such asStreet Fighter 4’s Rufus.
Some esports news would be most welcome too, though hopefully this will also address the game’s rather poor online. During this year’s Capcom Pro Tour Online, two playersforfeited their matches due to severe lagthat hampered the gameplay. With fighting tournaments having to take place online at the moment, online play has never been more important.
Things haven’t been great for the fighting game community in general recently, with this year’s EVO being canceled entirely followingserious sexual misconduct allegations made against its organizer.
Street Fighter 5is available on PC, PS4, and Arcades.
