Summary
Like many Bethesda titles before it,Starfieldboasts plenty of unorthodox solutions to standard gameplay, as one player shares a simple build on how characters can increase their carry capacity with no penalties whatsoever. Though having a cargo hold makesstorage inStarfieldeasy, especially if players upgrade it to account for contraband items, there’s still that addictive compulsion of a Bethesda sandbox to hoard items in one’s personal inventory as they go about collecting junk.
Thankfully, Bethesda has been more lenient with players for going over their compared to earlier titles, as it’s no longer the death sentence for character movement the way encumbrance used to be inOblivion. Havingmore items than they can carry inStarfieldpenalizes players by having them spend oxygen (O2) for running (instead of just sprinting), with the values incrementally getting bigger the more they go over the limit. Though certain magazines inStarfieldcan increase this value, players can mitigate the biggest inconveniences of carry weight simply by juggling loot between their ship, companion, and personal inventory.

That being said, someStarfieldplayers dared to wonder if the new encumbrance system could not only be mitigated, but outright ignored. For sheletonboi, the solution came in the form of a powerful equipment trait combo: one Assisted Carry, and two O2 Filters. The Assisted Carry trait reduces O2 consumption by 75% when running while encumbered, and the O2 Filter trait reduces O2 consumption from all sources by 25%. Combining these traits on a player’s equipment inStarfieldresults in near-infinite carry weight, with one important caveat: the inability to fast travel.
Given thevastness ofStarfield’s procedurally generated planets, for some players, losing that ability to pop back into their ship’s cockpit may be too big of a price. While having a jetpack can make terrestrial travel easy, it is by no means a substitute. However, if players can find their way to their ship without using fast travel inStarfield, they can make their way to New Atlantis to clear out their inventory without issue.
Assisted Carry and O2 Filters aren’t the only means of reducing the effects of carry weight, as any armor piece can conceivably roll with a trait that reduces the weight of resources inStarfieldby 25%. For players who don’t want toexploreStarfield’s random planetshoping for good loot, the Personal Atmosphere power can dramatically lower oxygen consumption as well, ultimately offering them a lot of flexibility in how they choose to deal with carry weight as a mechanic.
