The revival of Lucasfilm Games has reignited much of the gaming community’s excitement for potentialStar Warsprojects, especially with the announcement of Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s open-worldStar Warsgame - the first non-EA publishedStar Warsgame in almost a decade (not countingLego Star Wars: The Force Awakens). One of the projects that has fans excited is the possibility of aStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicreboot, but before then fans could be treated to remasters of the original two PC and Xbox titles.

Rumors ofStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicbeing rebootedoriginated in early 2020, when Disney and Lucasfilm announcedStar Wars: The High Republic, a multi-mediaStar Warsseries set in the post-DisneyStar Warscanon. This was preceded by an appearance fromKOTORvillain Darth Revan in theStar Wars: The Rise of SkywalkerVisual Dictionary, which introduced the character into the Disney canon, whileKOTORand its sequel were still consideredStar Wars Legendscanon.

After the announcement of Lucasfilm Games' revival, B.O.B Podcast host Bespin Bulletin revealed he learned that aKnights of the Old Republicreboot wasin development from a surprising studio, which Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier backed up. Now, Cinelinx Editor-in-Chief Jordan Maison revealed on Twitter that he has heard remasters of the original two titles are in development for modern consoles alongside the reboot.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicwas originally released for PC and Xbox in 2003byDragon Agedeveloper BioWare, and much of the game’s staff would later go on to create theMass Effectseries in 2007 including director Casey Hudson. In 2004, only a year after the release of the original game,Fallout: New Vegasdeveloper Obsidian Entertainment releasedStar Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lordsfor PC and Xbox. Both games are praised as two of the greatest western RPGs ever made.

While a reboot ofKnights of the Old Republicis still nothing but speculation, remasters of the original two games would be a welcome way to introduce fans to the series, especially as ittakes place hundreds of years before theSkywalker Saga. It could also introduce fans to its memorable characters and locations before they are reimagined in a potential reboot. What brings this possibility into question is the fact that the two titles are already playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, which already upscales the games. Fans will have to wait for any official announcements.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicis available now for PC and Xbox, the game is compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
