Viruses and contaminants have long played a very big part in the video game world. However, the mold that took center stage inResident Evil Villageis something else entirely. There have been plenty of games where a virus has taken out a population. There’s even been plenty of viruses or spores or some other sort of biological weapon that has brought about the “end of the world.” Some might argue that because the mold inResident Evil Villagehas not brought about the end of the world yet, it’s not nearly as dangerous as some other biological video game creations. But this mold is insidious and has insane potential.

The mold inVillageeven outdoes the world-ending virus that’s featured in so many other games in the franchise.Resident Evil’s T-Virus is quite formidableno doubt, but there are reasons that this particular mold is even scarier and is the most imposing biological threat in video game history. This particular contaminant is even worse than whatREfans saw from the Las Plagas inResident Evil 4. Anyone who has playedVillagelikely understands just whyVillage’s mold stands out not just in its own franchise but in other video games that deal with world-ending viruses, spores, and whatever else is thrown at humanity.

Resident Evil Village’s Mold Would Be Better If It Just Killed

Viruses have indeed played a large part in video game lore for decades. There are all kinds of different games that feature some sort of spore or virus that brought humanity to its knees, if it didn’t wipe it out entirely. However, thanks to the endless worlds that video games have provided, it sometimes seems as if something likethe Green Poison fromThe DivisionandThe Division 2would be preferred. At least the people infected by that just died. They didn’t turn into mindless zombies or beasts. They didn’t mutate into something else entirely. There’s a reason so many monster movies and games feature characters talking about wanting to die before they are transformed. Sometimes death is preferable.

The same can be said for theManhattan Virus that plays a rather large part inCrysis 2. Ironically, two of the most dangerous plagues in video games both originated in New York and damn near wiped out the planet. But again, those that survive those plagues know there is no danger of losing themselves to some sort of mutagen. It’s a rather run-of-the-mill plague compared to whatResident Evil Village’s mold has on offer.

Resident Evil Village’s Mutations Offer Much Worse

One of the most devastating infections in recent video game history is theCordyceps spore inThe Last of UsandThe Last of Us 2. LikeResident Evil Village’s mold, the Cordyceps spore certainly creates some serious mutations in its victims. However, these are more mindless killing machines looking to infect others, rather than the monsters and creatures born from the mold inVillage.

That’s the real reason the mold inResident Evil Villageis such a grave threat. It’s not just a matter of turning a man or woman into some sort of creature. It’s the fact that they still retain enough of themselves that they are formidable monsters. They aren’t easily tricked by closing a door or hiding under a table.Lady Dimitrescu is still a womanin some regards. Sure, she has a taste for blood like a vampire and she’s certainly grown in size and strength, but she’s still clever and can think on her feet. A virus or a spore that can both turn someone into a monster but allow them to think and behave as if they were still human is the most dangerous in the video game world. That’s whyResident Evil Village’s mutagen is the most dangerous of them all.

Resident Evil Villageis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
