Summary
As is the case with all long-running gaming franchises, theResident Evilseries has forged itself a number of features over the years that have become staples of the franchise. From cheesy dialogue and having to use typewriters to save the game, to having some kind of merchant and needing to solve some absurdly unrealistic environmental puzzles, theResident Evilserieshas its fair share of tropes. It’s pretty much expected thatResident Evil 9will carry forward the vast majority of these in at least some capacity.
Though each newResident Evilentry is always trying to bring something new to the table, it still retains a lot of the series' core DNA, and that often takes the form of some classic franchise tropes. While some of these tropes can seem pretty insignificant, they all combine to give the game that distinctResident Evilfeel, and they simply wouldn’t be the same without them. And though some more recent games in the series have tried to get by without it, there’s one franchise staple that needs to return inResident Evil 9: a third-person perspective.

Resident Evil 9 Should Have a Third-Person Mode on Launch
From the very beginning, theResident Evilfranchise has used a third-person camera perspective. In the originalResident Eviltrilogy, and additional entries likeCode VeronicaandResident Evil 0, the camera uses a fixed angle, as if it was mounted on the wall of the environment, meaning that the player-character will always be viewed from a third-person perspective. When theResident Evilseries made the leap to a new generation of consoles withResident Evil 4, that perspective changed to an over-the-shoulder one, but it still remained third-person, and thus felt like a natural evolution of the original set of games. The only set ofResident Evilgames to not follow this franchise pattern are the light gun spin-offs likeResident Evil Survivor.
But that all changed with the introduction ofResident Evil 7in 2017. Branded as a soft reboot for the franchise, and potentially inspired by the release oftheP.T.demo,Resident Evil 7traded in the series' classic third-person perspective for a first-person one. While this makes complete sense on paper, with Capcom wanting to deliver a more up close and personal survival horror experience, fans weren’t all too happy with the change, feeling as though it stripped away some of theResident Evilseries' core identity.
Despite the divisive reception, Capcom stuck to its guns forResident Evil Village, which also used a first-person perspective. But with the release of therecentResident Evilremakes, fans only grew more vocal on the topic ofResident Evil’s camera angles, viewing the remakes as the ideal gameplay experience that pushes the franchise into the modern age while also retaining the series' original spirit. But then something interesting happened. Back in October of last year, Capcom added a third-person mode toResident Evil Village.
It seems as though Capcom has heard loud and clear that fans prefer a third-person perspective forResident Evil, and now it would just feel a bit counter-intuitive to notmakeResident Evil 9a third-person game. While Capcom is technically right, andResident Evilis scarier from a first-person perspective, it just isn’t what most fans want. The best way to solve this issue is ifResident Evil 9simply had two camera options, one giving fans a classic third-person perspective, and one giving players a more intense and personal first-person angle, though, of course, this might raise some issues when developing certain cinematic moments.
