Much of the video game industry is interested in moving forward in terms of visuals, gameplay and overall technology. While the likes of the recentGTA Trilogyremaster has been a major let down for fans, bringing older games into the modern era makes sense, especially for those who didn’t experience the originals first time round. Then there are those who wish to go the other way. With aBloodbornePS1-style fan demake due out next year, some people are doing the opposite of a remake by taking newer games and making them look retro, andResident Evil 7is seemingly the next to get this treatment.
In a video uploaded to the Rustic Games BR YouTube channel, a team of modders are taking the 2017 fright fest that wasResident Evil 7: Biohazardand demaking it to give it that original PlayStation look. Although only short, the clip shows what the FPS horror title would look like if it had fixed camera angles, tank controls, and anachronistic visuals that belong more in the mid-1990s than in the 21st century.

Sadly, according to a report, the modders are not looking to make thisRE7demake available to the public, adding that it’s just a demo being made in the Unreal Engine. That is a bit of a shame as Capcom’s game isone of the best horror titles of the last console generation, so many fans would love to be able to play a fan-made version of the game that essentially hearkens back to the original trilogy from the 90s. Having said that, it’s possible that the team doesn’t want to incur the wrath of the original developer and publisher, given the potential copyright infringement lawsuit they could be slapped with.
What’s also interesting is that this is not the first demake of aResident Evilgame that’s been in the works by these fans. Recently, another video showedwhatResident Evil 4would look like as a PS1 game, with the same graphical down tuning and play style. Other games that have been demade by others includeThe Witcher 3,The Last of Us, and there was a demade trailer forCyberpunk 2077as well.
It seems that more and more of the community are keen to imagine newer games as retro PSX entries, or perhaps older. There’s even aDoomdemake that brings the game to Atari 2600, which shows that it’s not always newer games that fans are tinkering with. There is evidently increasing demand for turning the clock back on some of the industry’s biggest releases.
