Rock-type Pokemon are some of the most iconic throughout the history of the franchise, but they are few and far between inPokemon Scarlet and Violet. There are around 21 Rock-type Pokemon in the game, including all evolutions. With that said, every good Pokemon roster should include at least one Rock-type.

However, it is worth mentioning that Rock-types do have a weakness. In fact, they have a lot. While usually having great defensive stats, their weaknesses to other types can make them extremely vulnerable, so players will need to use Rock-types only when the styles make sense. Rock-types' five weaknesses are as follows: Grass, Water, Fighting, Ground, and Steel.

6South Province Area One

The first port of call is South Province Area One where three Rock-type Pokemon can be found right from the beginning: Bonsly, Rockruff, and Nacli.

The standout of these three isNacli, a formation of rock saltthat can be a formidable Pokemon all the way through the game. Nacli, and its evolutions Naclstack, and Garganacl are the only Pokemon known to have the ability Purifying Salt, which protects them from status conditions and means they take half-damage fromGhost-typemoves. Not only that, once fully evolved into Garganacl players will own aheavy-duty brute, able to withstand a lot of damage and dish out a lot too.

5South Province Area Three

The second stop is again in the Southern Province, this time in Area Three in the South, which is home to one of the five titans that inhabit Paldea, The Stony Cliff Titan Klawff. Klawff is a pure Rock-type Pokemon in the shape of a large crab that likes to cling to cliff faces. To beat Klawff, players will need to utilize Water, Grass, Fighting, and Ground-type moves. Klawff has considerable defense but should be beatable with Pokemon ranging from levels 12-20.

If players want their own version then they can catch aKlawf, the non-titan version. Klawf is newly introduced to the game and as yet has no evolutionary path but at the start of the game, it is a solid option for a Rock-type, and catching Klawf is one addition to the Pokedex too. Within this province, players can also find Rockruff, Nacli, and Larvitar.

4South Province Area Six

The South Province Area Five inPokemon Scarlet and Violetis a great place to find Rock-types. It’s no surprise as this area features Alfornada Cavern, where better to find Rock-types? The downside is that players will need to have a fairly strong set of Pokemon to be successful in this area, as the trainers use Pokemon with levels between the 30-40 mark.

With that said, it is definitely the place to explore for Rock-types as Drednaw, Lycanroc, Naclstack, Glimmet, Larvitar, and Pupitar can all be found in this area.

3East Province Area Three

This is one of the most bountiful Rock-type areas in all of Paldea. Within Area Three, players can expect to find Drednaw, Rolycoly, Carkol, Nacli, Glimmet, and Larvitar.

One Pokemon of interest in this area is Rolycoly. Not only is Rolycoly a Rock-type but upon evolution, this Pokemon’s final form is a Rock/Fire-type, diversifying its move set. Rolycoly evolves into Carkol who in turn evolves into Coalossal.

Finding a Rolycoly will be really easy for players as this little Rock-type is rolling around in abundance in Area Three but only in one specific place, northwest of Levincia and west of Zapapico. Roughly around level 34 is when players can expect Carkol to evolve into Coalossal, which won’t take a long time if the Pokemon gets regular use. Coalossal is a pure tank with great physical defense stats and even has decent attack stats. As Coalossal is a Rock/Fire-type players will need to avoid Water and Ground types.

2Casseroya Lake

Not a place gamers would expect to go hunting for Rock-type Pokemon, but Casseroya Lake is on the list for one reason, Sudowoodo. As stated in the game’s description of Sudowoodo, the Pokemon looks like vegetation, however, it is definitely a Rock-type. One of the most loved designs, Sudowoodo has been a mainstay in the game since its introduction back in Generation 2. Players will need to hunt in the North West of the map to find Sudowoodo standing still, pretending to be a tree until something gets too close! There are definitely better Pokemon out there, but there’s still nothing like owning a Sudowoodo.

There are only two other Rock-types in Casseroya Lake, Drednaw and Naclstack.

1The Great Crater

As players progress through the game and complete the storylines they gain access to the Great Crater, and it holds big rewards. For players who own the Violet version of the game, Iron Thorns can be found within the Great Crater. Iron Thorns, is a Paradox variant of Tyranitar, apseudo-legendary Pokemon, one of the strongest Rock-type Pokemon in the game.

Iron Thorns is a beast that any Pokemon Violet player should be hunting for, but it is quite rare, even among the Paradox Pokemon. This Rock/Electric-typePokemon is one of the best in the game due to its high attack and defense stats.
