Summary

James Gunn’sPeacemakerseason 2 is finally progressing now that the writers' strike is resolved. The DC Universe mastermind provided his latest update on the series, which will be his next project afterSuperman: Legacy.

Peacemakerseason 2 was announced shortly before the series completed its first run in February 2022. While Gunn promisedPeacemakerseason 2 would feature more DC cameos, plans for the show remained unclear when Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran. As part of Gunn’s plans for DC’s film and television division, the filmmaker rebooted the DCEU into the upcoming DC Universe. However, he later confirmed thatPeacemakerwould remain a part of the new continuity and would be his first DCU project after hisSupermanreboot.

However, Gunn’s DCU plans were halted when the Writers Guild of America went on strike in early May 2023. Consequently, Gunn and other writers could not pen new scripts, though he could continue serving as a director on behind-the-scenes details such as designs and storyboards. Now that the WGA strike is over,Gunnannounced he has started writingPeacemakerseason 2. The announcement was made in aPeacemakerbehind-the-scenes video posted on Gunn’s Instagram account in whichlead star John Cena playsQueen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” on piano.

Peacemakerremains one (if not the only) property from the DCEU era to transfer to Gunn’s new DC Universe franchise. The series originated as a spinoff of Gunn’sThe Suicide Squad, a loose sequel to David Ayer’sSuicide Squadthat featured a handful of characters from its predecessor but refrained from addressing the events of the former. Since taking the leadership role at DC Studios, Gunn has confirmed Cena’s Peacemaker, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, andFreddie Stroma’s Vigilante will return to the DCU. However,Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetleis currently the only character who isn’t fromThe Suicide SquadorPeacemakerconfirmed to be reprising his role.

Consequently, several fans wonder what this means for favorites like Jason Momoa’s Aquaman or Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. While Gunn has confirmed Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck won’t return as Superman and Batman, respectively, he’s remained tight-lipped on anyone else. This confused fans, causingGunn to explain that DCU canon officially startswith the animated seriesCreature Commandoes. However, he also said some actors and storylines from past DC projects would carry over into the DCU, which did little to end the confusion.

Still, withPeacemakerearning acclaim from most DC fans, this latest update on the show’s progress will be welcomed news to some. Of course, for theSnyderverse fans who continue pestering Gunnwith demands to continue Zack Snyder’s storyline,Peacemakerseason 2 might only be another frustrating sign that Gunn’s friends will be the sole carryovers from the defunct DCEU.
