The originalRisk of Rainis to be remade from the ground up while maintaining the art style, gameplay, and overall experience that fans fell in love with nearly a decade ago. Hopoo Games, the small team that built theRisk of Rainfranchise into what it is today, is to be the developer for the newly titledRisk of Rain Returns.Risk of Rainhas not gone anywhere since 2013, transitioning seamlessly into the third-person roguelike that most players and fans are familiar with today. However, before the sequel tookRisk of Rainin a radically divergent direction, the franchise began as a 2D multiplayer roguelike developed by a handful of people. Gearbox has had a partnership with Hopoo Games for years, publishingRisk of Rain 2and aiding the development of recent content that arrived in early 2022. Despite the main event showcasing only an animated trailer, a subsequent video titled Dev Thoughts #28 was released by Hopoo Games which included gameplay and a voice-over from Jonathan, the community manager.Risk of Rain Returnsis described as a remake of the “2D multiplayer action-platformer with roguelike elements,” and promises much more than just “a lick of paint on an old classic.”
All originalRisk of Raincontent is due to return, no doubt influencing the altered title, boasting “glorious new HD pixel art,” and an updated code base said to allow for features that were previously impossible to implement. Audio will be enhanced and Chris Christodoulou returns to score additional music, complementing the already electrifying soundtrack. Gameplay balancing arrives alongside new survivors, more abilities for existing survivors,and inclusions fromRisk of Rain 2.
Furthermore, there will be brand-new enemies, items, and layouts to ensure evenRisk of Rain"veterans will get lost again." A new mode and revamped multiplayer conclude the section that details what can be expected whenRisk of Rain Returnslaunches on Steam and Nintendo Switch next year. Until a release is confirmed, and more information gets teased,fans can enjoy the recent expansion forRisk of Rain 2,Survivors of the Void, which introduced a host of novel features, enemies, and playable survivors to revitalize the game.
