Big Mom has been one of the most important characters in the post-time skip ofOne Piece.Introduced as one of the Four Emperors of the Sea, Big Mom has played a massive role ever since Luffy said foot in the New World and has been heavily involved in the vast majority of the arcs, especially acrossthe Four Emperors Saga.

Big Mom first picked up a fight with Luffy on Fishman Island and she then went on to serve the role of the main antagonist during the Whole Cake Island arc. In Wano, she followed Luffy to the edge of the earth and there, she was finally defeated by the collaboration of Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law. While many expect Big Mom to be done in the story, there is a chance thatshe might return in the future.
Big Mom’s Connection To Elbaf
If Big Mom were to return in any arc ofOne Piece, it would most certainly be Elbaf. Big Mom has deep ties to this country and this has been highlighted in the story on various occasions. Going back to Whole Cake Island, fans found out that there is bad blood between Big Mom and the Giants of Elbaf. Even though there were most races of the world in her country, Big Mom did not have three, and one of them was certainly the Giants of Elbaf. While it didn’t make much sense to the fans at first, shortly after Big Mom’s flashback, things started to explain themselves better. As a kid, Big Mom was abandoned by her parents on the land of Elbaf and soon, she was found by Mother Carmel, a woman who pretended to be holy but was actually a child trafficker.
Carmel raised kids in an orphanage and eventually sold them off to the Navy or someone else. Mother Carmel pretended to be nice and holy and Big Mom took a liking to her. On Elbaf, she built a small orphanage and live there, however, she found Big Mom incredibly hard to control due to her hunger pangs, which were most certainly a sickness, and her freakishly strong body. Due to bad parenting on her part, Big Mom never managed to learn what is right and what is wrong and her mother encouraging this behavior only made things worse for her. Eventually, her hunger pangs led to her destroying the village she lived in and, later on, she also managed to kill Jorul, one of the Elders of the giant tribe of Elbaf. Immediately, she was dubbed a monstrous being despite being just 5 years old.

Knowing that she would profit from Big Mom tremendously, Carmel pleaded for her life and managed to get them to spare Big Mom. They then sailed away and build a tiny orphanage on a nearby island. On her 6th birthday, Big Mom ended up eating everyone and that is how the powers of Carmel’s Devil Fruit, the Soru Soru no Mi, ended up transferring to Big Mom. From here onwards, Big Mom met Streusen and then went on to become a famous pirate. Eventually, she found herself becoming a member of the Rocks Pirates and later on, when the crew split apart, she established the Big Mom Pirates.
While one might think that Big Mom’s connection to the joints of Elbaf ends there, that isn’t quite the case. Big Mom knew that the Giants of Elbaf did not like her and to remedy that, she arranged a marriage between her daughter Lola and the Prince of Elbaf, Loki, who was infatuated with her. Lola, however, did not want to get married to him and, thus, ran away from home, starting her own pirate crew eventually. Big Mom, realizing that her plans had been foiled, tried to pass off Chiffon as Lola and this plan failed miserably. The Giants of Elbaf realized that they were being tricked and the relationship between the two got even worse.

Big Mom primarily sought the Giants of Elbaf for their strength and she believed that if she had their power, she would have defeated all the other Yonko long ago. The connection between Big Mom and Elbaf still stands and if she is alive, she will definitely return when the Straw Hat Pirates reach Elbaf.
Big Mom’s Conclusion On Wano
In Wano, Big Mom’s character finally received its conclusion and it was one that not many fans would have liked. Big Mom was defeated by the joint effort of Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid. Both of them Awakened their abilities and managed to take down Big Mom. While they did not have it in them to completely finish her off in a proper fight, they did manage to throw her off Onigashima and she ended up dropping some incredibly powerful bombs on herself, leading to her eventual defeat. After the conclusion of the Wano War, fans could see Big Mom in a giant pool of magma, which then exploded and, thereafter, her fate remains unknown.
While many fans expect Big Mom to have died, the Big Mom Pirates were seen shortly after in the seas around Wano. They engaged the CP0 in combatand presumably defeated them. The fact that the Big Mom Pirates were around the area means that they could have saved her and that she is alive and well. Big Mom lost her position of Yonko, however, if she is alive, she might well return to the story and the perfect place for her to do that would be the land of Elbaf.

There are quite a few reasons for Oda to keep Big Mom alive. For one, he doesn’t really like to kill off the main villains. This is especially true for characters who aren’t entirely evil. While Big Mom has layers of evil blended into her character, she isn’t entirely bad. In fact, her dream is to create a utopia where all races can exist equally without having to look down on one another. Taking her nice side into consideration, it is possible that she might very well be kept alive by Oda and, knowing Big Mom, she would immediately follow Luffy if he were to go to Elbaf.
Big Mom’s Return On Elbaf
The Elbaf arc is eventually happening inOne Pieceand Oda has already laid the groundwork for it. This was confirmed on Egghead Island, where fans were made aware of Saul being alive and the people of Elbafwithholding important information regarding the Void Century. This all but confirms that the Straw Hat Pirates will go to the land of the Warriors. At the same time, Shanks operates around the area of Elbaf and this could very well be where Luffy meets the man who set him on the path of Pirate King. Big Mom, knowing that Luffy is going to Elbaf, could follow him. On Elbaf, things might actually be quite different for Big Mom than what fans expect.
If she does end up going to Elbaf, she will likely challenge Luffy, however, Big Mom is, at her heart, a misguided person. Her motivations are very similar to Luffy and these were highlighted in Wano once again. Big Mom wanted to fight for the people of Okobore Town, who saved her and fed her. Even when she wanted to kill the people of the Germa Kingdom, she only did it because they were branded to be the evil forces of the world. To her, these people deserved to die. When she raided nearby countries for ingredients for the Tea Party, she only destroyed the armies of the places where she got food from and took what she needed, not killing mercilessly for no reason.
Essentially, Big Mom is a mix of both good and evil and for a character such as her, redemption is certainly possible. At the same time, Big Mom also does not know the truth about Mother Carmel and this could, perhaps, come in the Land of Elbaf, where her character arc finally reaches its conclusion. If Big Mom finds out the truth about everything that happened on her 6th birthday, perhaps she will change her ways. Perhaps, Big Mom might entrust her dream of bringing equality to Luffy and her character will then ally with Luffy. Both of them have similar goals and for Big Mom, allying with Luffy would be the best-case scenario. This is especially true since Katakuri is also an ally of Luffy and is rooting for him to become the Pirate King.
The perfect conclusion for Big Mom’s character arc would be to run an orphanage in Elbaf and then look after the kids who have nowhere to go. Of course, all this hinges on whether she is alive or not, and if she is, fans can expect good things for her character in the future of the story.
