A nice milestone is always exciting, especially when it involves a highly-anticipated project like the upcomingBatgirlmovie. After years of uncertainty and the occasional worry about who would end up directing, it looks like things are finally progressing smoothly. So how about an actual shot of Leslie Grace as Batgirl herself in full superhero garb?

Grace, who plays Barbara Gordon in the impending film and was recentlyspotted on theBatgirlset as Barbara, just posted a frankly breathtaking image of herself in her character’s actual crime-fighting outfit, and it’s one heck of a way to debut a suit. Taking plenty of inspiration from the designs from the comics, it’s a costume that would make anybody look up on a dark Gotham night and say, “hey cool.” Posting the photo to Instagram, Grace looks ready for action and also ready to lead the charge of superheroes no longer wearing obtrusive dark eye makeup under their masks. The comic book movie world is ready to heal.

“I use their expectations against them,” Grace posted in the caption. “That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts.” This quote is from the well-liked 2003 comic miniseriesBatgirl: Year Onewritten by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon. While the plot of theBatgirlfilm is still largely under wraps, many assume that it will take at least some inspiration from that particular comic story arc. The fact thatMichael Keaton will supposedly appear as Batmanmay lend credence to that theory.

The suit itself looks excellent. It seems to take clear cues from the more recent iterations of the outfit seen in the comics and animated series like the always plug-worthyHarley Quinnon HBO Max. Clad in moveable leather and just enough gadgets strapped to her belt and leg, it looks like practicality is the name of the game here. Frankly, it’s great to see superhero suits like this that focus on function while still boasting a snazzy form factor.

Batgirlwill be helmed by the directing duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, known for the 2015 Belgian crime filmBlackas well as for directingBad Boys for Life. Much like howJames Gunn effortlessly dances between Marvel and DC, the directing team is also set to work on the upcomingMs. Marvelseries for Disney Plus. The script forBatgirlis penned by Christina Hodson, who also wrote for 2020’s fantasticBirds of Prey.

So with a cast and staff like that along with such a great looking super suit, fans and newcomers alike have plenty of reasons to get excited forBatgirl. Here’s hoping it follows the quality trend of recent DC offerings likeThe Suicide SquadandPeacemaker. Not necessarily in the “bloody and surprisingly dark but somehow still hilarious” aspect, but hey, it would be fun to talk about.
