Mortal Kombat 1story director Dominic Cianciolo recently sat down for an interview with Temple of Geek, during which he revealed that the game will have 24 playable characters upon its release on September 19. Cianciolo says that not every character will have the same amount of screen time inMortal Kombat 1’s cinematic narrative, but he promises that the game’s pre-fight banter and ladder endings will give them all plenty of characterization. He also explained that deciding which characters to include is often left to himself, NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon, and even feedback from fans.
So far, 15 characters have been confirmed forMortal Kombat 1’s default roster, with rumors suggesting that pastMKcombatants like Sindel, Reptile, and even Shao Khan (who is now known as General Shao) might be added to the growing list in due time. As for additional DLC characters,NetherRealm has already confirmed guest appearances from Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker, with an additional rumor hinting that the planned second Kombat Pack could introduce Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, and Doomslayer on top of returning favorites like Noob Saibot and Kano.
Even without these DLC additions,Mortal Kombat 1looks to have a packed roster with 24 playable characters right out of the gate. Nine of these roster slots haven’t been officially filled yet, meaning that there is still a chance for often-requested fighters likeMortal Kombat Deception’s Ashrah to still be confirmed beforeMortal Kombat 1launches in mid-September. Of course, speculating about who will make the cut is almost as fun as playingMortal Kombatfor a good portion of the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.
