Hogwarts Legacyfollows a young fifth-year student during their time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Shortly after they arrive at their new school, they are given the option to explore the world outside, where they can pursue a variety of different quests and unlock some extremely helpful abilities.

Unlocking new abilities inHogwarts Legacyrequires the player to earn and exchange Talent Points for whatever they wish to learn. Since the amount of Talent Points obtainable during a playthrough is limited, however, the player will need to forgo some in favor of others. This will limit players to certain playstyles depending on theTalent buildthey choose, so the player should carefully consider what they want before spending their Talent Points.

Hogwarts Legacy Richard Jackdaw

Updated on July 21st, 2025 by Chad Thesen:Games can see many changes over the course of their lifespan. Hogwarts Legacy is one such game. When the game originally released, it did not have a method to respec talent points, but this has changed to allow players to now respect either a single category or all categories at the same time. Players will be able to make a talent build after progressing enough through the story, but their levels may be different. However, there are some general talents and spells they should know by this point. This allows for an optimum early game build.

How To Get Talent Points

Though players won’t be able to access Talents until they have completedthe Jackdaw’s Rest main quest, they will still be able to obtain Talent Points by leveling their character up. Uponreaching level 5, every level up will reward the player with a Talent Point to spend onwhatever Talent they choose. Once the player has reached level 40, they will have receiveda total of 36 Talent Points, but since there are48 Talents available, 12 of them will need to be sacrificed.

Once the player has gained access to the Talents section in the main menu, they can begin acquiring whatever Talents they see fit from theSpells,Dark Arts,Core,Stealth, andRoom of Requirementcategories. Acquiring all the Talents from one category will allow the player to fully maximize the category’s potential, but choosing Talents from each of them will allow for a much more rounded experience.

The Best Non-Dark Arts Talent Build

Before acquiring too many Talents during the early game, the player should consider if they want touse Dark Magic. If they don’t, they can feel free to avoid the Dark Arts category altogether. Not using dark magic has its limitations; however, avoiding the Dark Arts category will grant the player10 extra Talent Pointsto spend elsewhere.

For those who wish to get the most out of a non-Dark Arts Talent build, they will have38 other Talentsto choose from. Sadly, this will still require 2 Talents to be discarded, but deciding which ones is quite easy. These arethe best Talentsto acquire for those who want to abstain from using the Dark Arts:

Casting Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy

Thunderbrew Potency

This non-Dark Arts build encourages players to make use of the majority of the Talents available to them, while only discarding a mere few. It also grants access to some of the more overlookedRoom of Requirement Talentsthat, when used correctly, can have pretty devastating effects.

This Talent build serves to showcase that a non-Dark Arts user can be just as powerful as a Dark Wizard without resorting tothe Unforgivable Curses. It is the perfect choice for those who want to avoid takingHogwarts Legacy’s somewhat darker path.

The Best Overall Talent Build

Those who intend to make use of dark magic during their playthrough will be able to acquire10 Talents from the Dark Arts subcategory. While implementing the Dark Arts into one’s playstyle can provide some serious power, it also prevents the player from unlocking other crucial Talents.

Thankfully, it is possible to design one’s Talent build to allow players to use multiple Talents from each subcategory while also ensuring the protagonist becomes as powerful as they can. To do this, the player should ensure toacquire these 36 Talents:

Though choosing this build will grant players some pretty amazing Talents, it will also force them to sacrifice some helpful ones. That said, this build is designed to only include the most powerful Talents available in the game, so whatever Talents are absent are arguably less beneficial than those that are present.

Acquiring these7 Dark Arts Talentswill allow players tocurse multiple enemies at onceand thendispose of them all with a well-timed Avada Kedavra. In order to include these Talents in the overall build, most of the Room of Requirement Talents have to be discarded. Even so, it is still possible to incorporate potions and plants into the player’s playstyle with this build, though they won’t be as powerful.

The only real downside to this build is that it requires players tosacrifice both Wiggenweld Potency Talents. Choosing not to acquire these Talents will result in Wiggenweld Potions only partially healing the protagonist when they are wounded. To make up for this, the player should always ensure tohave plenty of Wiggenweld Potionsat hand before beginning a battle and should also be prepared to use as many as they need.

Talents To Avoid Using

Although each Talent inHogwarts Legacyis useful in some way, some are far less reliable than others. That said, what one player considers an unimpressive Talent, another may see as a must-have.

Choosing what Talents to avoid gettingdepends entirely on what players plan to doduring theirHogwarts Legacyplaythrough. Those planning torely on stealthto infiltrate enemy encampments should purchaseTalents in the Stealth category, players who plan to rely on potions and plants in combat should browsethe Room of Requirement category, and those who wish to avoid using Dark Magic no matter what shouldsteer clear of the Dark Arts category.

SinceHogwarts Legacyallows for so much variety while in combat, players will likely come to rely on a few specific combinations of spells and abilities. As a result of this, some spells and abilities will end up being discarded; if players are happy with how their current setup is, they should consideravoiding the Talents associated with spells and abilities they rarely use.

Can You Reset Talents?

Yes, while this feature was not present when the game launched, players are now able to respec all the talent points in a specific category, or all of their talent points across every category. This means players will be able to create an early game build to make use of, and once they have new spells and a better understanding of the different ways to use talents, they can create a more personalized talent build to suit their needs.

Whenever you want to respec your character, you will need to spend some currency. The more points you currently have invested, the more costly it will be to respec them.

Best Early Game Build for Hogwarts Legacy

In order to get Talent Points, players will need to first complete the main quest, “Jackdaws Rest”. However, they will be able to start building up talent points even when they can’t spend them. This means some players may even already be above level 16 and can start unlocking Talents within the Level 16 category.

Best Early Spells Talents

Players will find themselves in combat frequently, even in the early parts of the game. For this reason, they will want to invest their talent points for dealing with large groups of enemies that may overwhelm them. Players will want to pick up these 3 Talents first to overcome everything the game can throw at them.

Having Accio Mastery means players will be able to pull 3 enemies close together. This can then be followed up with Incendio Mastery to hit all of them at once. This is an amazing combo for dealing with mobs. Players can then focus on dealing damage as normal until Accio wears off. The moment it wears off, cast Levioso while these enemies are still close together to lift them all up at the same time. This can keep 2 additionals stun locked the whole time, and prevent them from being any kind of threat.

Best Early Dark Arts Talents

Sometimes enemies will be surrounding players, and they will have to worry about these enemies striking them from a distance. Players should pick up the following to deal with all distant enemies without stopping their assault on their three stun-locked ones.

This combination of Talents will allow players to stupefy enemies to put curses on them, and use Expelliarmus to mark other enemies. Spreading the curse out will mean plenty of extra damage just by targeting the already designated enemy. This strong offense will allow players to conquer combats they otherwise would fall short of overcoming. Enduring Curse is another great one to throw in if players are already at level 16 by this point.

Best Early Core Talents

Players will not need to worry about Core talents early on. They can pass over these for now, but may find some use in Spell Knowledge later on. Having a dedicated slot for combat and a dedicated one for common utility spells can save players a lot of time, as it means no more switching up spells to catch a flying book or putting the right spell back on to guide a butterfly back to a mirror.

Best Early Stealth Talents

While Stealth is a present factor in the game, many players will find themselves not suffering at all for completely disregarding it. It is for this reason having spells that will help players in a fight is a better call, as there are plenty of unavoidable fights.

Revealing all enemies in an area and watching their patrol routes is all they will need to clear an entire encampment while concealed. Players can still attempt a stealthy approach first, but if their cover is blown, they’ll be glad they have all the tools they need to overpower their foes.

Best Early Room of Requirement Talents

Brewing up potions can be helpful, but this also involves a lot of gardening and material collecting. Players should pick up the hopping pot early and always have 3 in this room. Checking back frequently will have players build up a surplus of potions and plants. Once fights get harder, then it is worth investing Talent Points here to use these items in fights.

Hogwarts Legacyis available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch release scheduled for November 14th, 2023.
