An unfortunate video fromThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntshows why using an open flame when exploring the Continent can be so dangerous. A new item, introduced as part ofThe Witcher 3’s next-gen update, can illuminate Geralt’s surroundings better than a Torch but a crucial drawback remains.

There are certainly games more well-known for environmental interactions thanThe Witcher 3, but that is not to say the open world does not include them.Eviscerating doors with Aardand causing explosive barrels to ignite with Igni are just a couple of the ways Signs can be used to remove obstacles and decimate monstrous foes. An achievement titled Environmentally Unfriendly even requires the player to defeat 50 enemies using the environment, hinting that “swamp gas, insects, or objects” could be manipulated to earn it.

Swamp gas is a toxin familiar to most players, abundant amid the areasurrounding Nilfgaardians stationed in White Orchard. Any that have attempted to take out nearby Drowners with the aid of Igni are likely to have been on the receiving end of a rather unpleasant discovery - the gas is flammable and does not discriminate. Not only does this occur when swamp gas comes into contact with Igni but any open flame, as discovered by Buttgetter101 during a video they uploaded to Reddit.

It begins with Geralt casuallybacktracking through a cave located in Velen, using the Candle Lantern to illuminate his way. Introduced with version 4.0, the Candle Lantern is an alternative to the trusty Torch, providing a more intense light at the cost of no longer being omnidirectional. However, as it is an open flame just like the Torch, coming into contact with swamp gas causes the immediate area to explode and flings Geralt across the cave. The clip stops at the perfect time, catching the Witcher in midair.

Comments questioned why they had not just been using the Cat potion, which is a consumable dedicated to granting vision in absolute darkness. After all, Geralt is a Witcher; bred to be capable of ingesting alchemical creations that dramatically enhance his abilities, thus having to use a Lantern or Torch is arguably beneath him. However, continuously navigating menus to apply potions and decoctions can become tedious, something that can hopefully be addressed with thefuture Witcher projects that CD Projekt Red has in development.

The Witcher 3: Wild Huntis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
