Gundam: The Witch from Mercuryannounced on its official website that they will air a special recap episode on May 14th. This episode will look back on some of the biggest events that happened from the second season of the series thus far, specifically from episode 13 to 17. Episode 18 is scheduled to air the following week.
The story of the second season ofGundam: The Witch from Mercurytakes place about two weeksafter the end of the first season. People who were at the Plant Quetta when the Earthian mercenary, Dawn of Fold, launched their attack are now finally getting the chance to move on with their life. That being said, since Delling Rembran was mortally wounded, her daughter, Miorine Rembran, has to be by his side as he undergoes critical medical procedures. Back in the Asticassia School of Technology, however, Suletta and the rest of the Earth House are swamped with duel requests from numerous students who want to beat the reigning champion. So begins the next chapter of Suletta and Gundam Aerial’s journey.

A recap episodeis nothing new in the world of anime. Almost every series that has the chance to produce more than one season worth of content will eventually create a recap episode. More often than not, the main purpose of a recap episode is to remind the viewers about the key events that happened in the previous seasons. This is especially useful if there’s quite a long gap of time between each season.
The other reason why a studio might create a recap episode is to repurpose their series in order to gain more viewers. The Gundam franchise is actually known to repurpose their major series into compilation movies. Since the 43 episodes of the originalMobile Suit Gundamwas turned into a trilogy of compilation movies, almost every subsequent major Gundam series has followed the same tradition. The last one being a compilation movie based onGundam: Reconguista in G.
However, those are not the case at all with this upcoming recap episode. After all, it’s barely a monthsince the second season started, so there’s really no need to remind the viewers about what has happened in the last five episodes. And since we’re still in the early part of the second season, there’s not enough content to be repurpose into a movie. So the purpose of this upcoming recap seems to be something else entirely.
Unfortunately, the officialGundam: The Witch from Mercurydoesn’t mention any reasons behind the upcoming recap episode. So for viewers who’s not interested in spending 25 minutes watching a recap episode, you can skip this week’s episode and wait for episode 18 to be aired on May 21st.
