Summary

GreedFall 2: The Dying World, the upcoming prequel to Spiders' 2019 cult classic,GreedFall, is currently set to enter an indefinite early access period this summer as the developer works alongside player feedback to make the game the best version of itself. Set three years before the events ofGreedFall,GreedFall 2puts players in control of a Teer Fradee native who is forced off the island as the dreaded Malichor disease is beginning to spread.

As a prequel,GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldhas a chance to do something its predecessor could not, and it might very well be to its benefit to do so.GreedFallwas intentionally designed to reflectthe glory days of BioWare— in which the developer saw numerous successes in titles such asDragon Age: OriginsandStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic— so its blueprint was essentially already set in stone. Now,GreedFall 2can establish its own identity by providing a more accessible experience than its predecessor ever could have.

GreedFall 2’s Prequel Status Gives It One Unique Advantage Over Its Predecessor

GreedFall Lacked Modern Accessibility Options

GreedFallisn’t a difficult game by any means, especially when it comes to its simple, straightforward combat and repetitive exploration. However, there is a reason it has only ever achieved “cult classic” status in the gaming world.GreedFallwas inspired by a very distinct style of gameplay and storytelling that was primarily used in games that are now at least fifteen years old.Gaming trendsand playstyles have significantly changed since then, which would makeGreedFall 2a less accessible experience today if it followed in its predecessor’s footsteps.

In addition toGreedFalltaking a more old-school approach to gameplay, it fails to implement the accessibility of modern games. For example, players are not allowed to fast-travel from anywhere and must instead first reach a travel point and then select a different travel point to be transported to, much like they can inThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is especially noticeable asGreedFall’s exploration is often lacking, so there is little reason to enforce it withfast-travel restrictions akin to those inDragon’s Dogma 2.

GreedFall’s quest guidance is also fairly antiquated, as the route from one point to another is sometimes difficult to discern. In many modern role-playing and action-adventure games, players have some sort of guide they can follow every step of the way until they reach their objective. InFinal Fantasy 7 RebirthandGhost of Tsushima, for example, players can follow birds to reach a point of interest in the world. Games likeFable 2, on the other hand, give players a glowing trail to highlight the best route to their objective. It is limited accessibility options such as these, that giveGreedFall 2an advantage over its predecessor.

GreedFall 2 Can Utilize Its Prequel Status to Provide a More Accessible Experience

SinceGreedFall 2is a prequel, it can justifiably offer an “easier” or altogether simpler experience with a wider range of accessibility options. When a sequel is made to be more accessible than its predecessor (likeMass Effect 2), it naturally draws in newcomers. Unfortunately, those newcomers lack the narrative and worldbuilding context provided by the game(s) before it, and there is little motivation to revisit those earlier titles due to their limited accessibility. Prequels, however, can get away with being more accessible since they serve as the foundation for the game(s) that came before them.

Greedfall 2 being a prequel should make it more accessible from a narrative standpoint by default, as new fans will not have to worry about having missed key story moments from the previous game.

Spiders has already confirmed thatGreedFall 2will include several new accessibility options that weren’t present in the first game, like difficulty sliders, but the specifics of most of these features have yet to be divulged. Nevertheless, it would make sense forGreedFall 2to be more welcoming to newcomers as a prequel, and it might even result in a much larger following forGreedFall.
