Gray Zone Warfareby MADFINGER Games is a tactical FPS that focuses strongly on realism, putting players in combat situations where every choice counts. While this approach might be comparable togames likeEscape from Tarkov,Gray Zone Warfarelooks set to take the concept to the next level, featuring various mechanics designed to create a realistic survival experience for players as a new IP looking to establish itself and make its mark.
In a recent interview with Game Rant, MADFINGER Games' co-founder and creative director Marek Rabas unveiled more about howGray Zone Warfare’s intuitive health system works and how it incorporates realism. Rabas also spoke about its overarching focus on realism and related features, such as ballistics simulation, and how all of that works in the FPS title.

Gray Zone Warfare’s Intuitive Health System Explained
Although there are manyunique health systems in video games, one big difference betweenGray Zone Warfareand others in its genre is its lack of “health points.” As Rabas explained,Gray Zone Warfare’s health system focuses on maintaining and surviving the effects of individual body parts when damaged,
We even simulate the cavities inside the body, so it works differently. It’s not just some kind of line going through your body, but it’s actually making a cavity and injuring your organs. For example, we don’t have HP, like health points. We have body parts and organs. If the organ is destroyed, you die. If you survive, there are some kinds of big consequences - we call them symptoms and effects. You can then, for example, bleed out.

To some extent,Gray Zone Warfare’s health system is somewhat gamified. As Rabas added, it’s not possible to be completely realistic for obvious reasons. However, Rabas also mentioned it is possible to perform field surgery and repair organs like the heart and brain, stating, “It sounds silly, but it’s necessary” and “The goal is to fight a little bit longer.” That said,if players get shot in the head, they will die instantly, but depending on where they get shot, Rabas explained, it is still possible to survive.
Battle Realism And Ballistic Simulation In Gray Zone Warfare
Dealing with any injury inGray Zone Warfarealso encourages players to think tactically as part of its slower-paced approach and aims to create a more realistic survival experience, compared toFPS franchises likeCall of Dutyoften featuring fast-paced combat and quick-rezzing. As Rabas went on to explain,
We don’t want players just against each other, just moving, shooting, and waiting for who will die first. This is not what we want. We want it to feel like everything is meaningful - every movement and every action is meaningful.
Gray Zone Warfarealso looks set to offer players realistic combat with its inclusion of ballistic simulation, featuring bullets flying and interacting differently with materials from armor-piercing bullet capabilities to full metal jackets, for instance. Additionally,Gray Zone Warfarepresents players with a system based on certification compared to traditional skills point leveling-up systems, which could appeal to players seeking more realistic, military combat challenges.
Gray Zone Warfareis currently in development and is due for release in 2024.
