At this point, it’s fair to say thatGame of Throneshas a somewhat mixed legacy. While there was a time where the grimdark fantasy HBO drama was everybody’s favorite time-killer, the show’s 8th season left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans. Between the lackluster final season and the continued delay for the next book in the original series, many have been itching for aGame of Thronesfix that just can’t be satisfied by any other franchise.
Luckily for those fans, HBO has already invested quite a bit of time and money into theGame of Thronesuniverse and has several spin-offs in the works. One of those projects,House of the Dragon, is already getting underway, which means that newGame of Thronescontent is slowly, but surely, getting itself ready for primetime. While no official images or scenes have been shown, the cast and crew are ramping up to start filming quite soon.

As for the show itself,House of the Dragonwas greenlit back in 2019 and got a 10-episode order right off the bat, mostly based on the powerhouse that is theGame of Thronesbrand.Game of Thronesdirector Miguel Sapochnik is taking up a showrunner position, andGeorge R.R. Martin will be servingas a co-creator as well to help keep the show in line with the author’s original vision for the universe.
The plot is a prequel sort of affair, set in the Targaryen Dynasty about 300 years beforethe events ofGame of Thronesas depicted in the original HBO series. Beyond that, not much is known about the series, though it will likely fall in line with the original show’s tendency towards political maneuvering and violent, grim conflict. The project has no current release date beyond 2022, and it’s hard to say when it will finish filming.
It’s not the only spin-off series in the works, with at least 6 other shows already in the cards. In fact, the spin-off is getting its own spin-off, as the project9 Voyagesis set to tie directly to the events ofHouse of the Dragon.Some have questioned the wisdom ofgreenlighting so manyGame of Thronesshowsall at once, but it seems HBO doesn’t intend to back down from the projects.
WhileHouse of the Dragonmay be the first available, clearlyGame of Thronesfans won’t be lacking content for many years to come. Until then, however, fans will have to be content with new images of the cast at the table read for the first spin-off.
House of the Dragonhas a release window of 2022.
