Square Enix is sharing its latest tease forFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewith excited fans. Today’s tease is a new piece of art, perhaps a still from one ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake’s many cinematic cutscenes. It depicts an iconic moment from the originalFinal Fantasy 7, though there are many, to be fair. The scene in question is Cloud and his friends' escape from the city of Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth. It’s in many ways the end of the first chapter ofFinal Fantasy 7, which is fitting givenFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeis in many ways the next chapter.
The new art shows Cloud, Aerith, Red XIII, Barret, and Tifa at the end of a destroyed or unfinished overpass. Cloud is sitting on his motorcycle, as the team just went through a lengthy and violent chase sequence. In the background, the Shinra Headquarters can be seen at thecenter of Midgar. The party’s backs are turned toward background while they look toward the horizon. It’s appropriately dawn, with the sun rising.

While the newly released art is very well done, it’s a view thatFinal Fantasy 7playersnever got to see. The scene from the original game is a little bit different. There’s still the end of the road leading out of Midgar and the party does look out toward the horizon. However, they’re only shown from the angle of the city looking outward. The camera also hovers far in the background, rather than zooming in on them. They also don’t group up like in the new art, but kind of meander so that their text bubbles are easily distinguishable.
In the originalFinal Fantasy 7, this sequence occurs immediately after a big boss fight. The boss is a large 6-wheeled machine with a robotic torso from the waist up. The machine uses its large blade arms, spiked wheels, and a flamethrower ability set to try and take down the protagonists. After the fight ends,Cloudwalks out toward the end of the road and says, “Sephiroth is alive. I… I have to settle the score.” The team agrees, knowing the fate of the planet depends on finding Sephiroth. “I guess this’s good bye, Midgar,” Tifa says as the scene ends.
Funnily enough, Square Enix has already confirmed that the story ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketakes place entirely in Midgar. At least, that wasSquare Enix’s plan as of E3 2019. The story outside of Midgar will have to be taken up byFinal Fantasy 7 Remake’s various follow-ups or sequels, if Square Enix keeps with them. This image may then be whatFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeplayers see at the very end ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake. It could be the end of the game. Hopefully, there’s more toFinal Fantasy 7 Remakebeyond this point.
