After having played for over 700 hours, anElden Ringplayer has discovered a neat trick for finding illusory walls in the game’s many catacombs.Elden Ring, one of the best-selling games of 2022, contains all the hallmarks of a classic FromSoftware action RPG – punishing boss fights, opaque storytelling, and treasure chests that sometimes do more harm than good. The illusory wall is up there with all the most loathed/beloved FromSoftware tropes and is one of the most frustrating to uncover.

InElden Ring, every new area has an underground system of catacombs filled with a labyrinthine series of gray walls, difficult enemies, and traps that shoot fire or arrows. All the hardships can be worth it, however, after discovering an illusory wall, which are magical false walls that disappear when the player interacts with them. They usually hide a great piece of armor,a fancy newElden Ringweapon, or an entirely new path for players to explore. But illusory walls have a nasty reputation of being difficult to spot. Players usually find them by accident or by rolling into every wall in the game since players know FromSoftware has hidden them somewhere.

That might have all just changed. A Reddit user by the name of illiterateboii says they’ve poured over 700 hours into the game, which isnot uncommon forElden Ringdiehards. They have provided video evidence on how to easily spot an illusory wall. Turns out, almost every wall in the catacombs has a small frame of bricks between the floor and the bottom of the wall. All of them, except for illusory walls, which have no such bottom brick framing. Assuming illiterateboii’s discovery can be applied to every illusory wall in every catacomb inElden Ring, then spotting one is no longer as arduous a task as it used to be.

Illiterateboii’s discovery doesn’t remove all the headaches of finding illusory walls. But it can potentially make the process of finding them much more efficient, especially considering thatsome walls inElden Ringhave a nasty reputation. All the players would have to do is pay close attention to the bottom of every wall they come across rather than swinging a weapon or rolling into every wall they find in the hope that vanishes before their eyes. It could also be a huge time saver considering that there are only around 30 to 40 total illusory walls in the game versus the thousands of others that are just normal solid walls.

The discovery itself is potentially incredible and will help a lot ofElden Ringplayers who will likely be playing this game for hundreds of hours for years to come. What’s even more incredible is how long it took anyone in the community to discover it. Or, at least, make it publicly known. It acts as a testament toFromSoftware’s subtlety of designand commitment to allowing players to make small but hugely impactful discoveries like this all on their own.

Elden Ringis out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
