Dragon Quest, one of the most popular JRPG franchises in the world, is now confirmed to have a sequel in development.Dragon Questmay not be quite as popular as Square Enix’s other JRPG franchise, Final Fantasy, but it’s still remarkably successful. Final Fantasy 7 Remake does launch in March, though. Square Enix will apparently be following that up withDragon Quest 12.
One ofDragon Quest’s original creators and the current head of the franchise, Yuji Hori, announced on Twitter recently thatDragon Quest 12was in development. Hori took to Twitter to wish his fans a happy New Year, but provided an update on theDragon Questfranchiseat the same time. Hori says, loosely translated, that “12 seems to be a bit ahead” in terms of development. He doesn’t provide any release window or timeframe forDragon Quest 12, but confirmation that the game exists and is moving along well should appease fans for the time being.

Hori also mentions in his tweet that whileDragon Quest 12developmentis ongoing, fans can expect some other surprises to release in the time being. Hori doesn’t make any promises but does note that there may be multiple projects that release beforeDragon Quest 12. It’s unclear if Hori is referring explicitly to games or if he’s including other multimedia, as there are a variety of anime and manga-relatedDragon Questprojects in the past.
If Hori is talking about video game projects,Dragon Questhas several which could be continued in the relatively near future. WhileDragon Quest Builders 2recently launched in 2018, given that the first game launched in 2016 a third could potentially be out in 2020 or 2021. AnotherDragon Quest Heroesmusou game is also about due. Alternatively, Square Enix could be working on a newDragon Quest Monsters,Mystery Dungeon, orSlimegame.
Despite the good news, it may be some time before Square Enix has anyDragon Questnewsto share. Hori could be teasing projects that may yet be years away from release. Game developers tend to think in timelines a little grander than what video game fans do. Nevertheless, just the knowledge thatDragon Quest 12and several otherDragon Questprojects are in development should keep fans content for the time being.
Dragon Quest 12has no currently announced release window or supported platforms.
