Summary

A peculiar bug is occurring in the asymmetrical multiplayer horror gameDead by Daylightthat places survivor bots permanently under the Haste effect. This allows them to outrun almost any killer, frustrating many players ofDead by Daylight.

Bots are still a fairly recent addition toDead by Daylight. Introduced exclusively to custom games alongsidethe launch of The Knight in late 2022. A little under a year later, the bots had been fine-tuned enough to replace disconnected survivors in public matches. Previously, whenever a survivor left the game, they would instantly die, putting the survivors at a disadvantage and also depriving the killer of points, interfering with their ability to effectively rank up from a match. The bots aren’t exactly winning any prizes, but they will still complete objectives and act as another body that killers have to deal with. A recent bug, however, is making them a bit too much to handle.

A video posted by Reddit user “ohsrymb” showcases an unusual glitch where a bot of Jeff Johansen can constantly outpace them, as if permanently under the effect of a Haste-enabling perk such as Sprint Burst or Lithe. Killers are typically faster than survivors, so to have a survivor possess such a speed boost is both very noticeable and very hard to deal with. Luckily, the bots inDead by Daylightare not the best at looping, but the speed boost was enough to turn what should have only taken a few seconds into a nearly 30-second chase that wasted a lot of the killer’s time and very easily could have cost them the game.

A commenter by the name of “Yosmow” claims that this bug can occur when a survivor player disconnects from the game right as they use an exhaustion perk. Most exhaustion perks are some of the most powerful inDead by Daylight, with the offset that they leave the survivor “exhausted,” and can not be used again until they recover. The exhaustion meter can not recover when running, so many exhaustion perks only see use once per chase. With this bug, however, the bot appears to be permanently under the haste effect granted by an exhaustion perk, without getting exhausted or losing the haste, allowing the bot of Jeff to effortlessly outrun the killer.

Dead by Daylightis currently undergoing a public test build where players can try out Lara Croft, the new upcoming survivor, but this bug was encountered in the base build of the game. There has been no word from Behaviour Interactive regarding this glitch, and considering the other issues currently plaguing the game, such as Trickster causing bright rapid flashes on screen with his knife attacks orspots where survivors can become invulnerable in Backwater Swamp, there are other fixes that need to be made. Given how easy this bug is to replicate, however, it may not be long until the wider player base starts to abuse it, and it becomes a much larger issue.
