Call of Duty’s voice chat moderation system has gone live alongside its big fall release,Modern Warfare 3. The AI-powered technology, called “ToxMod,” was previously used in beta in bothWarzoneandModern Warfare 3since late summer, but it is now being rolled out globally across all three titles as announced by theofficialCall of Dutyblog. The technology was developed by Modulate, a company dedicated to combatting toxic behavior online.
As of the release ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the moderation system has been officially launched globally, excluding the Asia-Pacific region. ToxMod filters both voice chat and text, with the technology being able to read through 14 different languages. For in-game voice chat, the moderation team looks to expand into Spanish and Portuguese next.
It is worth noting thatCall of Dutyisn’t the only franchise dealing with online toxicity. For example,Overwatch 2players have asked for more chat filters to combat toxicity. Still, it’s not limited to any one or two franchises. This type of speech is rampant in online chat rooms both in and outside the gaming space. With these recent moves, however, it seems as though the team atCall of Dutyis taking some responsibility and looking to make their ecosystem more friendly to all gamers.
Just last year,Call of Dutyintroduced a new code of conduct that resulted in 500,000 bans. However, the fight against toxic behavior is likely going to require an ongoing effort. Not to mention, the chatter around AI will likely make this recent move somewhat controversial. The idea of AI-powered technology listening in to conversations may rub some gamers the wrong way even if done for altruistic reasons. At the end of the day, it has long been thought that something needs to be done about the toxicity surrounding online gaming, and judging by the actions of the team atCall of Duty, it would appear as though they agree.
