Summary
It’s not a Bethesda title if it doesn’t have a Thomas the Tank Engine mod, andStarfieldjust got its own bizarre version that turns every ship in the game into the infamous locomotive from The Railway Series. Theship builder inStarfieldhas enthralled players since launch, as the community painstakingly replicated iconic designs from other sci-fi franchises such asStar Trek,Star Wars,Mass Effect, and more.Starfieldplayers have also dabbled with original concepts, sharing the completed ship builds all across social media.
In this vast sea of starship designs, a few unorthodox or bizarre vessels began cropping up – fromgun-shaped gunships inStarfieldto sailing boats and locomotives. And though players attempted to recreate Thomas the Tank Engine with the base game’s ship parts, the project was too ambitious to tackle without the use of mods.

However, thanks to the efforts of Trainwiz, the person responsible for designingSkyrim’s Thomas the Tank Engine mod, players can now experience space battles inStarfieldlike never before. All ships, including the player ship, become Thomas the Tank Engine for anyone who installs the mod. Given thatStarfield’s official modding tools will only be released in early 2024, this accomplishment was made by replacing every reactor model fromStarfieldwith Thomas. As such, the mod has some important caveats for players to consider.
Namely,Starfieldplayers are encouraged to design a fully-functioning ship that clips inside the locomotive model, and if they build outside those parameters, the parts will be poking out. While crude, this solution guarantees that anyenemy vessel inStarfieldwill look like Thomas the Tank Engine, paralleling Trainwiz’sSkyrimversion which replaced the game’s dragons instead. The mod that adds Thomas the Tank Engine is available onStarfieldNexus, as its library of modded content continues to grow.
WhileStarfieldhas shattered several player milestones, it is also currently the lowest-rated Bethesda title on Steam. The addictive sandbox experience that Bethesda’s games are famous for certainly exists in the Settled Systems, but many players have expressed their disappointment over the disjointed feel ofStarfield, as the game relies too much on procedurally generated content instead of the handcrafted journey of discovery that have come to defineSkyrimand its predecessors. Thankfully, as shown by the “Really UsefulStarfield” mod that adds Thomas the Tank Engine, the game’s burgeoning modding community will continue to improve uponStarfield, and hopefully, deliver an overall better experience in a year from now.
Starfieldis available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
