There’s a long-running debate about whetherAnimal Crossing’s most iconic NPC — the entrepreneurial Tom Nook — is a money-hungry businessman or a generous landlord. No matter which side of the fence one sits on, it’s hard not argue thatTom Nook has at least become kindersince his first appearance. However, one fan ofAnimal Crossing: New Horizonshas determined that Tom Nook has also gotten a heck of a lot richer.

Reddit user Mikey_hor posted calculations to figure out Tom Nook’s net worth fromNew Horizonsalone to the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit on April 17. By using the price of an in-game Nintendo Switch to approximate that 100 Bells exchange at the rate of one U.S. dollar, Mikey_hor multiplied the amount of money it takes to fully upgrade a player’s house by the copies sold for what is one of thefastest-selling Nintendo games of all timeto determine Tom Nook will make over $172 billion if everyone pays off their debts.

Mikey_hor compares this number to the current richest man on Earth: Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos. As of June 18, 2025, Bezos' net worth is around $142.5 billion according to Forbes. However the Redditor then goes a step further by accounting for the value of each island generated by sold copies ofAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsand the houses built upon it to find that Nook’s net worth is over $600 billion — or 4.5 times higher than Bezos.

Of course these calculations are approximate and rely on vague comparisons to real life, so take them with a grain of salt. That said, it doesn’t make the idea of how filthy rich Tom Nook potentially is based on all thesuckers taking part in his deserted island getawayany less hilarious, and Mikey_hor said they intend to go back to calculate Nook’s worth from previous games as well.

The top comment on the post compares Tom Nook’s monopoly over the"NookPhone" product and app marketto Apple, which adds a whole new layer to imagining how rich he might be. From there things keep evolving, and at one point circle back around to compare the Nook Miles one-day delivery service to Amazon.

With New Horizons being just over a month old, Nintendo has announced a big update that willexpand Blathers' museumand add more reasons for players to keep coming back. Whether or not they choose to spend that time lining Tom Nook’s pockets by paying off more loans, however, is totally up to them.
